'Parent ambassadors' wanted for marriage equality
SCS and GSBA team up to host workshop on outreach and education

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

On August 27, Seattle Counseling Service (SCS) and the Greater Seattle Business Association (GSBA), in cooperation with the Pride Foundation, will co-host a 'parent ambassador workshop' for marriage equality from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at SCS (1216 Pine St.) in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood.

In an effort to reach out to parents and families and address their concerns about marriage equality, the Pride Foundation (www.pridefoundation.org) is looking for 'parent ambassadors' to facilitate conversations with members of their communities, such as fellow parents in their kids' schools and sports teams and their neighbors, family members, and friends.

Pride Foundation has created a conversation guide that aims to help ambassadors reach their community in a way that works best for them, and the group will be conducting workshops on a regular basis.

This is a chance for people who are looking to make a positive difference in the future of marriage equality to learn how they can help change hearts and minds around this issue.

According to Laurie Carlsson, family outreach specialist for Pride Foundation, participants need not be parents to be effective ambassadors.

'We know that everyone is busy and the guide has been designed with that in mind,' said Carlsson. 'We're not looking for a huge commitment from any one person. A simple gathering of neighbors, a post on your neighborhood blog, or a letter to the editor goes a long way.'

Whether you're a Gay or Lesbian parent, a straight ally, or you would just like to help the people in your life on their journey toward acceptance, this is an opportunity to explore how to communicate with people in a way that creates room for change.

Those interested in taking part in this effort may contact Carlsson at laurie@pridefoundation.org or call (206) 323-3318.
