Celebrating Pride down South (South Seattle, that is)

Special to the SGN

Nearly 200 people enjoyed the beautiful weather at the second annual South Park Gay Pride Picnic. Held Sunday, June 10, on the banks of the Duwamish River, the picnic attracted a delightful mix of people from the South Park neighborhood, Georgetown, and the White Center area. Neighborhood activists and families with kids and dogs rubbed shoulders with LGBT Latinos/Latinas and punk rock aficionados while enjoying the music of Donna Summer and South Park's own Queer Punk band, Gnarlene and the Frisky Pigs, playing on the Pink Flamingo Stage. DJ Luis V of Noche Latina kept the beat going, and the reigning Miss Gay Latina Jennifer Montenegro and Rey Noyola gave energetic performances set against the majestic backdrop of the river.

The South Park Arts Council hosted a kids' art table, the South Park Library table had many books on LGBT topics in both English and Spanish, and Seattle PFLAG and co-host Entre Hermanos were on hand to connect attendees to resources and information. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence of the Mother House of Washington State added their special sparkle to the event. More than 200 free beef hot dogs and Field Roast veggie dogs were consumed along with cookies and popcorn donated by Little Rae's Bakery and Seattle Popcorn Company - both of which are based in South Park. A large chocolate sheet cake with green icing, decorated with the words 'Donna Summer: We Love to Love You Baby, now, forever, and always,' was enjoyed by all as part of a tribute to the dearly departed disco diva.

Event organizer Randy on Rose Street confirmed that this year's attendance was 20% higher than last year, and the drag performers really added to the festive mood. 'In addition to outreaching to the South Park neighborhood and through Entre Hermanos' media network and Noche Latina, this year we also passed out flyers at the Pride Skate Night at the Southgate Roller Rink in White Center and at the Carnival event in Georgetown.'

Randy remarked that 'many South Park businesses and individuals stepped up with funding and sponsorships so generously this year to make the picnic happen. It was a wonderful sense of support and encouragement. This is the first Gay Pride Picnic outside of Capitol Hill that I know of - it'd be fun to see a bunch of local Pride events in neighborhoods around the city all leading up to the big Pride weekend and march at the end of June,' he added.
