Spokane council tables marriage equality resolution

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Following five hours of public testimony and debate on April 16, the Spokane City Council tabled a resolution supporting the state's new marriage equality law, by a 4-3 vote.

According to news reports, Councilman Mike Fagan requested the council table the issue, pointing to a council rule against passing any ordinance or resolution on a subject not directly related to local affairs or business.

If forced to vote on the resolution, however, council members agree it likely would be approved by a 5-2 vote.

Two marriage equality supporters, Mike Allen and Steve Salvatori, say the council shouldn't vote on it.

Salvatori said he thinks council members aren't likely to affect a person's vote on marriage equality.

'Not one person changed their minds by talking to me,' he said.

As reported in The Spokesman-Review, Jeremiah Johnson, a North Central High School student and former member of the Chase Youth Commission, said the vote to prevent a vote was disappointing. He testified during the meeting that he loves Spokane even though he is regularly harassed for being Gay.

'It is a local issue,' he said after the meeting. 'It's a big deal not feeling a sense of belonging in Spokane.'

About 300 people turned out to Monday's meeting, an overflow crowd not seen at a council meeting in years.
