GLSEN Washington State announced this week that the Puget Sound GSA Leadership Summit is scheduled for March 31 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Meadowbrook Community Center (10517 35th Ave.). The event is free ($10 for lunch) and is open to GSA leaders, students, teachers, advisors, and educators.
'Educate yourself on new and interesting ideas that can help you work with your school, community, or those you come in contact with. GLSEN provides curriculum ideas, sensitivity trainings, and resources for all educators, students, advisors, and interested adults,' said GLSEN officials. 'Regional conferences serve to help GSA groups network with each other, gain information, plan group activities, set goals, and encourage participation in activities that further our goal of safer school environments for all students.'
There will be advisor and student break-out sessions. Clock hours will be available for teachers and provided by Puget Sound ESD, said officials.
Educators and advisors are invited to come to a Safe Space Kit training: 'Making Safe Space/Schools for LGBT Students.'
'During this training, participants will learn to explore personal beliefs about LGBT issues, learn how to support students, discuss strategies to get support from other teachers, and share advocacy strategies including resources,' said officials. 'We will have a student panel presentation. This is an interactive workshop. Please come with ideas and curriculum resources to share.'
Every school that attends will receive a free Safe Space Kit. (Note: if multiple people from the same school come, only one kit will be given for that school.)
Students will receive training on, and hear lectures about, youth suicide prevention, LGBTQ youth activism, GLSEN events/Days of Action (Including Day of Silence Training), PFLAG, Queers in hip-hop, recognizing the gender binary, self-defense essentials, and GSA legal rights.
There will also be a panel of LGBT athletes that includes the Rat City Roller Girls, Seattle Volleyball Club, Emerald City Softball Association, Seattle Sockeyes, Tilted Thunder, and martial artists.
