A Dyke About Town: Alonzo King Lines Ballet phenomenal

by Mercy Moosemuzzle - SGN Contributing Writer

Alonzo King Lines Ballet
Mercy and Cuteness were knocked out by the Alonzo King Lines Ballet at the University of Washington's World Dance Series on November 18. The sold-out crowd gave the performance a standing ovation.

Cuteness said they were technically very proficient with great lifts and pointe work. She liked having the woman behind the man in some pas de deuxes rather than the more traditional arrangement. Cuteness also liked the sets and lighting by Robert Rosenwasser and Axel Morgenthaler.

Mercy found 'Dust and Sand' choreographed to concertos by Corelli a satisfying combination of modern dance and classical music. She liked the fact there were some male duets and trios as well as mixed ones.

'Scheherazade' was set to original music by the same title by Zakir Hussain after Rimsky-Korsakov. It was also choreographed by Alonzo King. The dance had pleasing storytelling appropriate to its theme.

Point of Ignition
Mercy very much enjoyed Erin Dutton's novel Point of Ignition. Kate Chambers is a fire investigator. Alexi Clark is a bar owner whose fire seems suspicious. The romance between them is satisfying. Alexi's experience as a sober alcoholic is realistic. The details of firefighting and arson inquiry are well described. Some ambiguous pronouns bothered Mercy. The sex scenes were fun.

Werther
Assonance turned Mercy and Cuteness on to Seattle Opera's Young Artist's production of Werther, and they were glad she did. Stephanie Rhodes' piano playing made up for the lack of an orchestra. Andrew Stenson and Sarah Larsen sang their hearts out as the leads. Cuteness found Amanda Opuszynski shrill as Sophie. Mercy had somehow thought they were seeing Young Werther, a completely different opera.

Rainbow City Band
Mercy got a kick out of sitting in on the Rainbow City Band rehearsal for A Celtic Carol. The concert will be at Edmonds Performance Hall (EPH) Saturday, December 3, and will include a bagpipe player in front of EPH. The Rainbow City Orchestra will also be there. Her favorite quote from director Michael Clark was, 'The moment we tighten up is the moment it stops feeling like a dance.'

In rehearsal, Celtic Carol was festive and featured fun percussion with spoons and a baughram. 'Ireland: Of Legend and Lore' was powerful. 'Solas Ane' was lush. 'A Hanukkah Festival' was delicious. 'Wexford Carol' was bell-like. John Lennon's 'Imagine' was sweet. Traditional sing-along songs were fun.

You can get your tickets at rainbowcityband.com.

Chick Corea
Mercy and Cuteness are very much looking forward to seeing Chick Corea at Jazz Alley. The band includes Hans Glawischnig (bass) and Brian Blade (drums). They will be there December 1-4.

Corea is a jazz composer and pianist. He played with Miles Davis in the '60s and has been a legend ever since. Corea is the 2010 DownBeat Artist of the Year, a member of the DownBeat Hall of Fame, and a 16-time Grammy winner.

You can get your tickets at jazzalley.com.
