Rise n' Shine fundraiser garners over $10,000

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

For 22 years, Rise n' Shine has provided emotional support programs, stability, advocacy, and AIDS education for children and teens affected by HIV/AIDS. This includes children and teens who have been orphaned by the disease, those who live with a parent or other close family member with HIV/AIDS, and those who are infected themselves.

In a nutshell, Rise n' Shine is for the kids - the very youth our LGBT community has rallied around to support.

Nobody rallies and raises funds quite like the Gays. Proving that point, a group of bartenders from the local community got together May 25 at Purr Cocktail Lounge for a bartender auction to raise money for the kids at Rise n' Shine. The event, hosted by local drag entertainer GLAMAZONIA and sponsored by Barbie Humphrey, owner of Purr and a Rise n' Shine advisory board member, raised upwards of $10,000.

'It feels great to be able to give back to the community,' said GLAMAZONIA. 'Rise n' Shine is a great organization that has been around for a long time, so it's always good to help out where it's needed. The organization is well-managed and everything is handled locally. They do a good job at staying focused and not straying from their mission statement, which is to help the kids.'

This year marked the third time GLAMAZONIA has hosted the bartender auction. She has a history of working with the organization beyond this event as well; last year she held a toy drive fundraiser for Rise n' Shine.

This year's event had plenty of sponsors. Effen Vodka, UnderU4men, and the bartenders from Purr, The Grill on Broadway, The Elite, R Place, and Lobby Bar pulled out all the stops to raise a substantial amount of cash for the beneficiary.

'The money raised at Purr will be used for Rise n' Shine's mentor program,' Janet L. Trinkaus, founder of Rise n' Shine, told Seattle Gay News. 'Children and teens affected by HIV/AIDS must cope with far more personal and social pressures than kids from any previous generation. To help them cope, they need structured mentor relationships. Many of Rise n' Shine's mentors come from our community.'

The children of Rise n' Shine know about loss and change, as they have dealt with moving and custody switches, guardians, new schools, and living with HIV/AIDS in their family. Often, Rise n' Shine volunteer mentors are some of the child's most stable relationships. Their interactions are very valuable, especially during these major life situations and transitions.

If you are interested in making a difference in the life of a child or a teen by becoming a mentor or special friend, please contact Rise n' Shine at volunteer@risenshine.org. Mentor qualifications can be found on the 'Volunteer' page of the website.
