Cut Copy in Seattle 4/12

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

In the bloated field of electronic music, not everyone can be a star. Not everyone can pack clubs from Amsterdam to Jakarta to New Orleans, not everybody is privileged to perform at the Ultra Music and Coachella festivals in the same spring, and not just anyone can appear on a late-night talk show with a percussionist dressed as a gorilla.

But all this is happening to Cut Copy, a four-piece from Melbourne, Australia, who struck gold with their 2008 single 'Lights and Music' and are similarly drawing attention with this year's smash 'Need You Now' - in their back pocket is the band's second single from the new album Zonoscope titled 'Take Me Over.' I caught up with guitarist Tim Hoey via email shortly after the quartet launched their U.S. tour last week, which includes an April 12 concert at The Showbox SoDo - visit www.showboxonline.com for tickets, and note that it's close to selling out. From somewhere on the road (maybe a hotel bed with very little clothing), here's what Tim Hoey from Cut Copy got off his manly chest when he stepped into The Music Lounge.

Albert Rodriguez: What's your impression of Seattle from the times you've been here?

Tim Hoey: We love it! It reminds us of Melbourne a lot. The weather, the good coffee (!) and the music history is reminiscent of back home, so we always like visiting. Plus, I was a Sonics fan back in the day. What happened to them? One day I'd like to make a documentary on Shawn Kemp.

Rodriguez: For anyone who hasn't been to a Cut Copy live show, describe the experience.

Hoey: Euphoric, hedonistic freak-out with a real smooth comedown. No hangover the next day.

Rodriguez: Will your set list for this tour vary from city to city?

Hoey: Definitely. We actually have the luxury of having a back catalogue these days, so we can switch it up from night to night. Although, I always have a hard time remembering how they go. I have no idea how bands like Guided by Voices, Sonic Youth, or the Stones can easily recall songs from the vast array of material they have recorded over the years.

Rodriguez: How many songs from the new album will likely be played at each show?

Hoey: There will be a strong focus on Zonoscope material because that's the new record and that's what we're really excited about at the moment. But there will be songs from both Bright Like Neon Love and In Ghost Colours in there.

Rodriguez: Gay marriage is a big debate in America right now. Is it even an issue in Australia?

Hoey: Of course! For the record, we're PRO Gay marriage. I can't believe this is even an issue still. The heart doesn't discriminate who you want to spend the rest of your life with, so why should the powers that be?

Rodriguez: How many pairs of socks and underwear do you pack for a tour?

Hoey: Good question! This is the biggest dilemma we have pre-tour. I usually go with seven of each, but places like H&M become your closest friends on tour. You can always buy more.

Rodriguez: Is there anyone you're particularly looking forward to seeing at Coachella?

Hoey: Animal Collective, OFWGKTA, Ariel Pink.

Rodriguez: What's the secret to Dan Whitford's hair? It always looks so healthy.

Hoey: Funny you should say because Dan is actually working on his own line of hair products. It's going to be called 'Hair by Whitford.' Pretty soon everyone will have Dan's hair. He basically modeled it on the bad kid from Karate Kid.
