US Conference of Mayors backs marriage equality

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

On Monday, the US Conference of Mayors endorsed marriage equality in a resolution titled Equality and Civil Rights for Gay and Lesbian Americans.

In addition to supporting the freedom to marry, the mayors' resolution also endorsed a broad range of proposed federal legislation including the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), the Military Readiness Enhancement Act, the Uniting American Families Act, and the Matthew Shepard Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act (LLEHCPA).

Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels, newly sworn in as president of the Conference, said, "The nation's mayors are proud to take the lead in recognizing the importance of protecting all our citizens equally. It is now time for state legislatures and our federal government to enact the same protections for all our nation's citizens."

In reference to the freedom to marry, the resolution stated, "that the US Conference of Mayors supports marriage equality for same-sex couples, and the recognition and extension of full equal rights to such unions, including family and medical leave, tax equity, and insurance and retirement benefits, and opposes the enshrinement of discrimination in the federal or state constitutions."

"By passing this resolution, America's mayors spoke for the families they know and serve in communities across the country, and said that excluding those families from the freedom to marry must stop," said Evan Wolfson, long-time activist and executive director of Freedom to Marry. "The mayors have their fingers on the pulse of the country, and their voices today said loud and clear that ending discrimination in marriage is the way to go."

ENDA would prohibit workplace discrimination against LGBT employees. A compromise version - which controversially excluded Transgender workers - was passed by the US House of Representatives in 2007, but never came to a vote in the US Senate.

The Military Readiness Enhancement Act, among other provisions, repeals the Don't Ask Don't Tell rule introduced by the Clinton administration.

The Uniting American Families Act is a bill to eliminate discrimination in US immigration law by permitting same-sex partners of US citizens and lawful permanent residents to obtain lawful permanent resident status in the same way as opposite-sex married spouses.

LLEHCPA adds crimes based on perceived gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and disability to existing federal hate crimes laws, which already include race, color, religion, and national origin. It would also remove many restrictions on the circumstances in which federal hate crimes laws might be applied.

The US Conference of Mayors is an official non-partisan organization for cities of 30,000 people or more. It originated in efforts by US mayors to cope with the effects of the Great Depression of the 1930s. In the more recent past, the Conference of Mayors has been active in fighting predatory lending and foreclosures. In 2008 they unanimously passed a resolution supporting universal single-payer health care.
