Trust The Man

Directed by: Bart Freundlich

Starring: David Duchovny, Julianne Moore, Billy Crudup, Maggie Gyllehaal,

Eva Mendes and James Le Gros

Opened September 1st

Since they left 'The X-Files', most of the actors who starred have pretty much either sunk into obscurity (there was that short-lived series 'The Lone Gunman', that embarrassed all us fans to watch), and only David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson have been spared this. Though it can be said that Duchovny and Anderson, who played the leads on the popular show, have in the past had their share of flops on the big screen. However, as an avid fan of 'X-Files', and of Mr. Duchovny since I first saw him on the telly in 'Kalifornia' (with Juliette Lewis), I'm always overjoyed to see him in something new.

And it is refreshing to see him paired with the inimitable Julianne Moore in the marvelously urbane new film, 'Trust The Man' (which didn't get much press before its September release). A film about the nuances of relationships and life in New York, 'Trust The Man' zips along with a well matched ensemble cast of Duchovny, Moore, Billy Crudup and Maggie Gyllenhaal. And surprisingly, this may be one of the few that Duchovney's starred in that has some meat to it and some oompth.

Also, there are some moments so funny that I nearly wet my pants at the screening I went to and had tears in my eyes in other scenes. A perfect 'date film', or just a good feel good film. This one is to be enjoyed, whether you've been to New York and fell in love with the city or not. Hopefully this, and not films like some of the schlock I've avoided, are hallmarks of a good Fall season of films.
